What’s Motivating Tait Council Majority Push To Oust City Manager?

Anaheim Insider here. It’s unusual for a City Council to oust a City Manager, especially when the normal indicators of city government health are generally positive. Anaheim’s tax revenues are up, civic improvements are being funded and moving through the pipeline, the city’s convention and tourism economy continue growing, major economic investment is taking place. Other Orange County cities would kill to be in Anaheim’s shoes. So why is Mayor Tom Tait pushing to fire City Manager Paul Emery? He got City Manager Tom Wood fired in 2011 with no explanation. Will he and his Council majority do that...

Tait Council Majority Set To Terminate City Manager Paul Emery

Anaheim Insider here. It took King Henry VIII 38 years to go through six wives. Mayor Tom Tait is working on five City Managers during just six-and-a-half years in office – and there’s still time to make to match Henry’s record. Topping the closed session agenda for Tuesday’s council meeting is “Public Employee Resignation/Release/Dismissal” and the second item is the appointment of an Interim City Manager. SO it stands to reason Tait and his council majority are going to fire City Manager Paul Emery. Emery served as Interim City Manager from February 2014 until July 2015, when he was...

Councilman Moreno Honored By Anaheim Police Critics

Anaheim Insider here. I noted earlier this month that District 3 Councilman Jose F, Moreno has changed his tune, at least superficially, about the Anaheim Police Department and staffing levels. While Candidate Moreno dismissed the idea that more police led to greater public safety, Councilman Moreno is very worried that Anaheim police staffing levels aren’t high enough. This past weekend, Moreno was awarded the Public Service Award by the Law Enforcement Accountability Network, or LEAN. LEAN was started by local anti-police activists who frequent Anaheim City Council meetings to criticize the police in the harshest, over-the-top terms. It is...

Anaheim July 4 Fireworks Celebration On Track Despite Tait Majority’s Action

Anaheim Insider here. For 28 years, the 4th of July fireworks celebration in Peralta Park has been a beloved annual Anaheim tradition. Whether there would be a 29th year was thrown into doubt earlier this spring when Mayor Tom Tait and his council allies, pursuing a political vendetta, yanked city funding. Led by Councilwoman Kris Murray,  the Anaheim Hills Community Council, the Anaheim Chamber of Commerce and Councilwoman Lucille Kring went into overdrive to raise funds to cover the resulting deficit and ensure the Independence Day fireworks celebration would take place. The good news is they have been successful,...

Moreno Changes His Tune On Police Staffing Levels

Anaheim Insider here. What a difference drawing the short straw can make. When he was running for council last year, Dr. Jose F. Moreno didn’t know that if he won he’d be running for re-election two years later, in the 2018 off-year election. He barely beat Jordan Brandman in 2016 with high turnout by Democratic and Latino voters. He can’t count on either dynamic next year. Not surprisingly, he’s morphed from progressive firebrand candidate into a much more modulated incumbent. Candidate Moreno supported repealing the anti-camping ordinance; Councilman Moreno back-pedaled from that promise. Candidate Moreno supported making Anaheim a...
